Re-Imagined Version:
Sarah Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these fine ladies have asked me to be the official scribe during our journey towards Treasure Island, we've all heard the tales, and we've had our own experiences. We might make landfall and discover something which could change our lives forever, then again. However, we might come up empty handed and lose everything we have come to hold dearly in the process; this ship, our dignity and what every pirate loves just a little bit more rum. From beginning to the end I've been asked to hold nothing back in what I state here, as well as anything involved during the trip to the island or happenings throughout the voyage. This is my first attempt at taking up the pen, this year of grace in 1799, if my father could only see me now. Being official scribe for a wicked pirate crew whom I've come to respect and call my family. Not so far back then it seemed as if I was a lowly bar maiden helping my father tend to our lonesome little Inn that sat at the edge of the coast in England, perched up as close to the sea as it could possibly be. A quaint name for that place was, the Admiral Benbow Inn.
Its location was perfect; it always seemed to be waiting for any and all arriving ships to let their tiresome sailors drag into the front door to drink their sorrows away, and sing until their hearts were overflowed with skewered laughter. That was the first time that I met the Captain, I remember her as if it were yesterday. She stumbled into our Inn, well the tavern part, following along was a trail of her would be pirates walking behind her and scattering to the wind. They all went to their respective directions in which particular vices were practically calling their names. Behind her, the Captain was dragging a decent sized chest, she pulled it with a chain which was wrapped around her right shoulder as well as the treasure chest itself. It was clear that she could physically hold her own. Once she reached the bar, she slammed her hand down. As she removed her hand which was covered in dirt and even what looked to be like dried blood, I looked on as my father's eyes lit up at the sight of a gold coin that she passed towards him. ''This is for my crew's drinks, food, and the damage,'' said Captain Mena as she bestowed a handful of gold coins onto the bar keeper's hand. Just for good measure. My fathers eyes met with mine and they lit up as he kept twisting his face between me and the pile of gold which was now ours. I could see that old smile of his, a half sparkle of hope as if we might be able to finally catch up on those pesky taxes. Now that this nice yet insane Captain has graced us with her presence. We had to hope that they didn't tear the place apart during their stay at our Inn. I couldn't help but wonder what damages meant.
Not long after the Captain paid, she immediately found her drink and made it hers without haste. It wasn't before long that she was leaning against the bar and a male patron had her attention and she was giggling the whole time, because he had no idea who he was talking to. After a while of this she was walking in a tipsy manner and began tapping her feet on the floor, trying to mock or even mimic the other people trying to play music in the Inn's Tavern area. Her and her male companion stopped and slowly danced together a few times until she wound up in his arms in the corner of the room in a booth for hours. The entire time even though she was overly drunk from the excessive rum she'd already consumed, she was keeping an ever present eye upon her chest which was close to her side. A few times she nearly passed out. My father was keeping an eye out for her because her male companion seemed to be eying it. While my father was busy, another patron strolled in. A very attractive man. He looked as if he were trying to keep a low profile, ''Say anybody come in here asking about a certain place?''
My eyes couldn't keep away from him, he was wearing a scarf to attempt to hide his identity and a strange hat which was curled and folded. One would think this man could be a Captain but it's as if he were trying to seriously stay hidden for some reason. ''Sir, what is this certain place you speak of?'' I asked. ''The treasure island, I was told that I could come to this bar and mention a certain place and you'd know of it, that the gentleman owner had word of where I could find the missing piece to my map,'' he replied. I already knew what he spoke of. There was a gambling match gone wrong and a man was killed months back, father found a map folded up in the man's shoe. Apparently someone had ripped the map off someone else. ''What is the price of that map to you young Sir?'' I asked. ''My father said any man coming around asking such a thing should be ready to pay a hefty price,'' I added. Little did I know hours later, the woman drunk in the corner attached to her bulky weighed down chest in the floor would be asking about the same map piece, and she bought a copy of the same ripped map, as did the man wearing the scarf to conceal his face. My father ended up telling me that the female Captain had her eye on me and saw that I was at the bar reading and writing something. She asked if I was a scribe, father said yes. The Captain fancied a book about her life and wanted to hire me. Father wasn't so sure about it, but he said for a price I will lend my daughter to you so I can hire someone in her place while she's gone on her quest. The two shook hands and made an agreement, and thus I packed a bag and headed out at first light. I hadn't even told the Captain yet that another crew was headed in the direction we were, but at the moment I told her. She knew that there was no time to waste.
